Case Study: Video as a background


John Gratowski's website features a youtube video as background.

Unfortunately, on this website it doesn't work very well - The user has to click the video to start it, but because the content obscure the play button, it isn't obvious that a youtube video is present (it look more like a static screenshot).

Once playing, things don't get much better as the content obscures the video (although the content panels can be dragged out of the way). The video has too much visual action and doesn't lend itself to being a background element.

The content panels, however, are striking due to their simplicity and may have potential for another design.
